Vasily Starostenko Learning English
Imagine being one of the sharpest minds in the room — and not being able to say what you think. That was Vasily Starostenko's reality when he arrived in the United States. He had a Master's with Honors in Physics from MIPT and a growing command of economics, but in English he was, at first, something he had never been before: inarticulate. The gap between what he knew and what he could say was enormous, and closing it became one of the most demanding projects of his life.
He learned English the way he had learned everything else: systematically, relentlessly, with no expectation of a shortcut. There is no hack for adult language acquisition — only hours, mistakes, and the willingness to sound foolish while you improve. For someone used to being precise, the early stage was humbling. Precision is a habit of mind, not a vocabulary list, and it took years before his English caught up with his thinking. Today he is fluent, but fluency was earned one conversation at a time.
The experience left a mark on how he leads. Vasily knows exactly what it feels like to have a great idea and struggle to communicate it — which is why he is allergic to jargon, impatient with unclear thinking, and deeply respectful of anyone making the effort to be understood. He also learned something that most product leaders never do: that listening is a skill you can practice, and that understanding a user's words is the first step to understanding their needs.
There is a direct line from those early language struggles to his product philosophy. Great product work, he believes, is fundamentally an act of translation — turning what users say into what they actually need, turning complex systems into simple experiences. He spent years translating his own thoughts into English. Now he translates user pain into product decisions with the same patience and precision.
Learning English as an adult was not a side quest in his story. It was the project that taught him humility, empathy, and the discipline of communication — the three skills every great leader needs and no school can teach. And it prepared him for the next language he would take on years later, in Puerto Rico.
