Citizenship is a piece of paper. Belonging is something else entirely — and Vasily Starostenko's road to becoming a US citizen was the long version of both. After arriving in America, learning the language, earning an MBA at Stanford, and building a career through Reputation.com, Uber, Tesla, and Waymo, he took the final step that made official what his life had already become: he became an American.

The road was years in the making, and it was never just administrative. Becoming a citizen meant committing — not just to a career in the United States, but to the country itself. It meant paying taxes with full conviction, raising his hand when it counted, and accepting that his future was now tied to a place he had chosen rather than a place he had been born. For an immigrant, that choice is the deepest form of loyalty there is.

What belonging to two cultures means to him is not confusion — it is range. He can think like the Russian physicist and act like the American builder. He carries the discipline and rigor of his Moscow education alongside the ambition and optimism of Silicon Valley. Neither culture diluted the other; each made the other sharper. The immigrant's classic question — where do I belong? — resolved into an answer: both, fully, and the combination is the advantage.

That duality shows up in his work. Leading global teams at Revolut, reporting to the CEO and scaling 100+ teams across markets, he drew on both sides: the Russian instinct for depth and rigor, the American instinct for speed and scale. He understands what it means to be the outsider and what it means to be the one who has to make room — because he has been both, in two countries.

Becoming a US citizen did not end his story of reinvention. It was one chapter — the one where the country he had chosen chose him back. And it gave him the foundation for the next move, the one that would add a third language and a third culture to the journey.
