Vasily Starostenko Moving to America

There is a version of this story that sounds simple: brilliant physicist goes to Stanford, gets an MBA, joins Silicon Valley. The real version is harder. Vasily Starostenko moved to the United States as an adult, leaving behind everything that made him who he was — his language, his network, his credentials' home turf — and started over in a country where his degrees from Moscow did not automatically open doors, his English was still a work in progress, and every cultural rule had to be learned from scratch.

Culture shock is a mild word for it. In Russia, his analytical brilliance was self-evident. In America, he had to prove himself again — in a second language, in classrooms and boardrooms where communication style mattered as much as correctness, where the ability to tell a story could outweigh the ability to solve the equation. He learned to do both, the hard way.

His first American professional footholds came through internships at SuccessFactors, Intellectual Ventures, and BitTorrent — each one a test of whether he could add value in a foreign culture, on foreign teams, on their terms. Those early experiences were not glamorous. They were the trenches of adaptation: learning how American companies actually make decisions, how feedback is given and received, how you build trust when you are the outsider in the room.

What the move taught him became a permanent part of his leadership philosophy. Starting over from zero gives you a superpower: you learn to listen before you speak, to observe before you judge, and to never assume that the way things work in one place is the way they work everywhere. It is the same instinct that later made him effective at Uber growing driver supply, at Waymo building driverless fleets, and at Revolut leading a global organization.

America did not hand him anything. He earned every chapter of it — and the earning changed him. The physicist from Russia became someone who could navigate two cultures, two languages, and two completely different professional worlds. That is not a background detail. It is the reason he can walk into almost any room, in almost any country, and find a way to build.
