In 2008, Vasily Starostenko left Russia's lecture halls behind and crossed an ocean to attend the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Two years, 2008 to 2010, at one of the world's most influential business schools — for a physicist from Moscow, it was a complete change of operating system. The questions changed from how the universe works to how organizations work, how leaders inspire people, and how great products actually get built.

He did not just attend Stanford; he threw himself into it. Vasily became President of the Russian Student Association, organizing more than ten events for over a hundred members — building community the way he would later build product teams: with structure, energy, and a genuine care for the people in the room. He also completed the Public Management Program Certificate and joined a study trip to Japan, widening his lens on how different cultures organize work and innovation.

Summers were for testing ideas in the real world. He interned at SuccessFactors, at Intellectual Ventures, and at BitTorrent — three very different companies, three different windows into how American tech companies actually operate. For someone whose entire education had been in Russia, those internships were a crash course in Silicon Valley: how decisions get made, how teams move, how products ship when the market will not wait.

Stanford completed the arc that MIPT and the New Economic School had started. Physics had given him analytical rigor. Economics had given him an understanding of incentives. Stanford gave him leadership, a global network, and the confidence to operate at the highest level of the American tech industry — a confidence he would need when he went on to run product at Reputation.com, Uber, Tesla, Waymo, and eventually Revolut, where he led global Product and Customer Experience and scaled 100+ teams.

Two years at Stanford did not erase the Moscow physicist. They added a new layer: a leader who could think in equations and speak in human terms, who could hold the rigor of MIPT and the ambition of Silicon Valley in the same head at the same time.
