Sizes and dimensions: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen and King
Size is measured in inches of width by length. These are the industry standard measurements — and they are the five sizes that Sleep Shop sells:
- Twin — 38 × 75 inches (97 × 191 cm)
- Twin XL — 38 × 80 inches (97 × 203 cm)
- Full — 54 × 75 inches (137 × 191 cm)
- Queen — 60 × 80 inches (152 × 203 cm)
- King — 76 × 80 inches (193 × 203 cm)
Who is each size for?
Twin — one person, children and small rooms
The classic single: children, teenagers, small rooms and simple guest rooms. In the catalog, there are Twins starting at $85 (adjustable base) and models with headboards from $140. For growing children, the Twin provides years of use without taking up the entire room.
Twin XL — the long single
Five inches longer than the Twin: designed for teenagers and tall adults who sleep alone. It is also half of a King: two Twin XLs side by side form exactly a King (76 × 80). In the catalog: Twin XL with cover, $120.
Full — one person with space, or a couple in a tight room
With 54 inches of width, one person sleeps wide and comfortable; a couple fits, but with 27 inches per person — cozy. It is the favorite for guest rooms and small apartments. Full bases from $99 in the catalog (8-inch model), and the business reference price starts at $95.
Queen — the couple's size
The best-seller for the master bed: 60 × 80 gives 30 inches per person and the full length for tall adults. It fits in most master bedrooms. In the catalog, there are Queens for $99 (low height) and the 14-inch metal special for $120; with headboard, from $215 to $350 depending on the design.
King — maximum space
76 inches wide: 38 per person, the same as a Twin for each. It is the size for the family that gathers in bed on Sunday and for those who do not negotiate their space. It requires the largest room and doors with good clearance (see the buying guide). King bases from $99 in the catalog (low height and 6-inch model).
Size and the room
- Leave, if you can, 24 to 30 inches free on each side to walk and make the bed comfortably.
- A Queen fits well in a 10 × 10 foot room; for a King, 12 × 12 feet or more is recommended.
- Also measure doors, hallways and stairs: everything arrives new in a box, but the King mattress is wide and needs its space to turn.
Doubting between two sizes?
Go up a size if: two people sleep there and one moves a lot, if children or pets end up in your bed, or if you are tall and your feet hang off the Twin/Full. Stay with the smaller one if the room is small and circulation space matters more. The assistant will help you decide on the call, with no obligation.
- Continue with the ideal height or explore the base types.
