Bases and frames: types, materials and resistance

The base is half of your bed: it supports the mattress, defines the total height and decides how much weight the set can hold. At Sleep Shop, all bases are new in box, made of metal or wood, in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen and King. Here we explain the types so you can choose with confidence.

Metal platform bases

They are the heart of the catalog: a steel frame with continuous support for the mattress, without a box spring in most platform models. They are firm, do not make noise when properly assembled and come in heights from 6 to 18 inches.

• Standard metal frame — the everyday model: 14-inch Queen from $120 and 10-inch King $115, among many models by size.
• With metal headboard — the same support, with integrated headboard: vintage, artistic designs, in black or white, from $140 in Twin and $180 in Full.
• Bamboo with headboard — 14-inch Queen, $215: the warm touch of wood with a firm base structure.

Reinforced bases (heavy duty)

If the bed is going to work hard — couples, family, daily use for years — look at the weight capacity:

• Up to 3,000 pounds: 18-inch Queen frame ($170) and 18-inch steel Full frame ($160).
• Up to 2,200 pounds: 14-inch King frame ($160).

More capacity means thicker bars and more support points: less flexing, less noise and a base that feels solid when you sit on the edge.

Wood and upholstered bases

• Gray upholstered wood King ($230) and King with wood headboard ($270): the furniture finish, for those who want the bed to look like the center of the room.
• Wood provides weight and a more "furniture-like" feel than metal; metal provides lightness and easy cleaning.

Special catalog models

• Metal Twin bunk bed ($400): two beds in the space of one — read the safety section at Family and children.
• Adjustable Twin base ($85): the entry-level Twin model in the catalog.
• Size-adjustable frame ($90): a 12-inch base that adapts between sizes (Twin/Full) — practical for guest rooms and moves.
• Models with pillow or advanced headboard (Full $250, Queen up to $350): taller, padded headboards for sitting up to read or watch television.

What about assembly?

Everything arrives new in box for home assembly. On the call, the assistant will confirm what your model includes and what tools you need. If your model is a platform, in most cases you do not need a box spring: the mattress rests directly on the base — confirm this for your exact model when ordering.
