Mattresses: how to choose yours

Size first, always

The mattress and the base must be exactly the same size: a Queen mattress (60 × 80) on a Full base (54 × 75) will be too narrow and too long. If you are buying both, choose the size once — the size guide will help you — and then the height.

The sum that matters: total height

Your finished bed measures base height + mattress thickness. Examples with models from the catalog:

• Low Queen base (from the height line) + 12-inch Queen mattress = a low, modern bed.
• 14-inch Queen base + 12-inch mattress = 26 inches total: hotel height, with moderate storage space underneath.
• 18-inch base + thick mattress = 30 inches or more: verify with the flat-feet test in Heights.

Firmness: the general idea

Without getting into brands, the rule of thumb used by sleep specialists is:

• You sleep on your side: a surface that gives a little at the shoulder and hip helps keep the spine straight.
• You sleep on your back: medium-firm support maintains the natural curve of the lower back.
• You sleep on your stomach: a firmer surface prevents the hips from sinking and arching the back.
• Couples with different preferences: negotiate in the middle, or go up in size to move less on top of each other.

When to change your mattress?

Classic signs: you wake up with a sore body more days than not, the mattress has a visible sag where you sleep, or it is over 7–10 years old. If your base is firm and level but you sleep poorly, the problem is usually the mattress; if the base flexes or makes noise, start with the base.
