Most people live their whole lives in one language. Vasily Starostenko lives his in three — and each one shaped the person he became. Russian is his mother tongue, the language of his childhood, his physics education, and his deepest thinking. English is the language he earned as an adult, the language of Stanford, Silicon Valley, and a career that ran through Uber, Tesla, Waymo, and Revolut. Spanish is the language he is living now, in Puerto Rico, learned the only way that sticks: by immersion, by necessity, by daily life.

Russian gave him precision. It is the language of his MIPT years, of mathematical proofs and exact definitions, of a culture that respects depth and does not tolerate sloppiness. When he thinks at his most rigorous — stripping a product problem down to first principles — he is thinking in the patterns Russian taught him. The language of his childhood became the operating system of his intellect.

English gave him scale. Learning it as an adult meant learning a new way to persuade, to lead, to tell stories that move organizations. English is the language in which he organized 100+ people as president of the Russian Student Association at Stanford, in which he reported to the CEO of Revolut while scaling 100+ teams, in which he teaches thousands of students on Udemy. If Russian taught him how to think, English taught him how to be heard.

Spanish is teaching him presence. In Puerto Rico, language is not a tool for achievement — it is the fabric of belonging. Serving Sleep Shop customers in San Juan, building Callpages, being a neighbor: Spanish is rewiring him toward warmth, toward the relationship behind the transaction. Una que otra frase a la vez, he is becoming someone new again — the way he became someone new when he learned English.

His feeds read like the life: trilingual and unfiltered. A Russian meme carousel riffing on weather forecasters; a Spanish poem about pitorro de coco, the island's moonshine rum; captions that switch languages mid-thought. He does not perform his languages — he lives in all three at once, and the internet gets the unedited version.

Three languages, three lenses, three versions of the same relentless learner. And the lesson for anyone he advises: every language you learn does not just add words. It adds a way of seeing. Build your career, he might say, the way he built his languages — one immersion at a time, with no shortcuts and no finish line.
