Vasily Starostenko Entrepreneurship

Some people have jobs; Vasily Starostenko has a pattern. The founder thread runs through his entire career — the recurring decision to stop advising from the sidelines and start building. It started early: in 2008, he co-founded Digi Cambodia in Phnom Penh and served as Head of Product, learning what it means to create a company where nothing exists yet — no brand, no customers, no playbook. Just a problem and the will to solve it.

The thread never broke. Between and alongside leadership roles at Tesla, Waymo, Uber, and Revolut, he kept building: Lightfish, his own ventures, and eventually the two companies he operates today from San Juan — Callpages, the product he built so every business can have a great call page, and Sleep Shop, his local metal bed frame business. Different scales, different markets, same muscle: see an opening, build the thing, serve the customer.

Since 2010 he has also sat on the other side of the table, as an angel investor and advisor to growth startups — which made him a better founder, because he learned to see his own companies the way an investor sees them: is this real, does it scale, and does the founder actually want it badly enough? Founding and investing turned out to be the same skill viewed from opposite ends: judgment under uncertainty.

He still does the homework, too. In June 2024 he completed the Puerto Rico Department of Economic Development and Commerce's Digitize 3.0 seminar — eCommerce strategy for small and medium businesses — and posted the certificate like a founder who never graduated from the classroom. Twenty years of product leadership, and he still takes notes when there is something to learn.

For him, entrepreneurship was never a phase or a title. It is simply what he does when he sees something that should exist and does not. Cambodia taught him to start with nothing. Silicon Valley taught him to scale. San Juan taught him to build a life around it. The thread continues — because builders build. The next company is always, quietly, already underway. It always is.
