At the Beach

If you grow up in Puerto Rico, the beach is not just a place you visit on vacation; it is part of who you are.

What it is

If you grow up in Puerto Rico, the beach is not just a place you visit on vacation; it is part of who you are. It is where families celebrate birthdays with coolers full of food, where friends play dominoes under a palm tree, where children learn to swim, and where everybody goes to clear their mind. So when a Puerto Rican travels to another beach — in Florida, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Hawaii, or even Spain — they arrive with an expert eye and a happy heart. But beaches are different around the world, and spending a perfect day at the beach in another country means learning new vocabulary, new rules, and new pleasures. The sun, the sand, and the sea speak a universal language, but a little English will help you enjoy them even more.

The day begins with preparation. Before you leave your hotel or apartment, you pack your beach bag carefully. The star of the bag is sunscreen, also called sunblock, which protects your skin from ultraviolet rays.

Let's talk — 10 questions to discuss with your voice tutor:

2. What do you always pack in your beach bag?

3. Do you prefer a calm beach for swimming or a beach with big waves? Why?

4. What water activities have you tried, and which would you like to try?

5. Why is sunscreen important, and how often do you use it?

6. What do the different beach flags mean? Why should swimmers respect them?

7. What is your favorite food to eat at the beach?

8. How can tourists help keep beaches clean and protect sea animals?
