Health and rest: back, posture, and allergies
We spend a third of our lives sleeping, and the bed — base and mattress working together — is where the body recovers. This page is general and educational information: it is not medical advice nor does it promise to cure any condition. If you have persistent pain or a diagnosed condition, your doctor is in charge; we help you with the bed part.
The job of the base for your back
The spine rests best on a surface that is firm, level, and sag-free. That is where the base matters as much as the mattress:
- A base that flexes or has bars spaced too far apart lets the mattress sag in certain areas — and your back pays the price.
- The reinforced bases in our catalog (up to 3,000 pounds of capacity, with more support points) keep the plane uniform for years, even with two people.
- If your mattress is good but you wake up uncomfortable, check the base first: it is the forgotten half of the bed. More at Bases and frames.
Posture according to your sleeping position
- Side sleeper: look for your shoulder and hip to settle in without twisting your waist; the pillow should fill the space between your head and shoulder.
- Back sleeper: your lower back appreciates support that doesn't sag in the middle.
- Stomach sleeper: a firm surface helps prevent the hips from sinking and the back from arching too much.
- You move a lot / sleep with a partner: a larger size (Queen or King) reduces interruptions — see Sizes — and a solid base prevents one person's movement from waking the other.
In Mattresses you have the firmness guide that complements this section.
Allergies, dust, and hygiene
Dust mites live where there is fabric, stuffing, and humidity. Without promising miracles, there are bed choices that help keep the sleeping area cleaner:
- Metal bases: they have no upholstery or stuffing where dust can accumulate, and they can be cleaned with a cloth — a practical advantage over upholstered or wooden bases with fabric.
- Space under the bed: a medium or high base lets you sweep and mop underneath, where dust gathers without you seeing it.
- Bedding: wash it regularly and ventilate the room; these are habits, not products, but they make the biggest difference.
Height, mobility, and safety when getting up
The correct total height (base + mattress) makes sitting and standing natural: feet flat on the floor, knees at about 90 degrees. For older people or those with limited mobility, that measurement is worth more than any other specification — the height guide shows you how to calculate it. For children, it is the opposite: low beds, to their scale — see Family and kids.
Snoring and head elevation
Elevating the head slightly while sleeping helps some people breathe more comfortably at night. The catalog includes an adjustable Twin base ($85); ask the assistant about the elevation options available for your size before ordering. This is for general comfort, not a treatment for any sleep condition.
