Base heights: low, medium, and high
Two beds of the same size can feel completely different depending on the height of the base. Sleep Shop organizes its models by height — low (0–9 inches), medium (10–15), and high (16 inches or more) — and sells heights from 6 to 18 inches. The height that matters in the end is the total: base + mattress.
Low height (0–9 inches)
- Catalog prices: Low Queen $99 · Low King $99 · 6-inch King $99 · 8-inch Full $99. (Twin and Full by height also exist; confirm the exact price for your size in the catalog or on the call.)
- For whom: children's rooms (closer to the floor = shorter fall), people who prefer a low-profile, modern bed, and rooms with low ceilings or a window behind the headboard.
- Cons: little to no storage space underneath, and getting up can be harder if you have sensitive knees.
Medium height (10–15 inches)
- Catalog prices: Medium Queen $125 · Medium King $120 · 10-inch King $115 · 14-inch metal Queen special $120.
- For whom: most people. It is the "hotel" height: with a typical mattress, the bed is at a comfortable height for sitting on the edge with your feet flat on the floor.
- The balance: some space underneath for flat boxes, without the bed dominating the room.
High height (16 inches or more)
- Catalog prices: High Queen $170 · High King $160 · High Full $160 · 18-inch reinforced Queen (3,000 lbs) $170 · 18-inch steel Full (3,000 lbs) $160.
- For whom: anyone who wants under-bed storage — with 16–18 inches, boxes, suitcases, and containers fit; tall people; and anyone who prefers to "slide off" the bed instead of "getting up" from it.
- Note: add the mattress. An 18-inch base with a 12-inch mattress leaves the surface 30 inches from the floor — verify that it is comfortable for everyone who uses it, children included.
The flat-feet test
Sit on the edge of your current bed: if your feet are flat on the floor with your knees at about 90 degrees, that total height works for you. If your feet dangle, look for a lower combination; if you have to push yourself up a lot to stand, a higher one might help. When choosing, think about the total height (base + mattress), not just the base — in Mattresses we show you how to add it up.
Heights and special models
- With headboard: the base height does not change, but a tall headboard requires its own visual space; measure the total height against windows and pictures.
- Bunk beds: the height is fixed by design — safety comes first; read Family and children.
- Twin adjustable base ($85) and 12-inch adjustable size frame ($90): flexible options for guest rooms.
